Pla TaPian

Sleepy child
........Thai people call a newborn baby "Dek BaeBor" pronunciationbecause it sleeps in the cradle all day long as it gradually grows up. What can amuse the baby is the colorful, eye-catching mobile -- typically made in the shape of a carp or a triangle -- which hangs over the cradle. The reason of making a mobile are to divert the child, to test its eyesight and perception, and to check if the child can fix his gaze on something, and if it can see colors and movements normally as he turns two months old. Among handmade mobiles, Pla TaPian (a carp-shaped plaything made from palm leaf) is the most popular. It consists of a large carp, the mother, and a school of her smallish offsprings, which flickers cheerfully as the wind blows. Nowadays weaved Pla TaPian has become a handicraft used mainly for display or for household decoration. Painted and enamelled, it has become inappropriate to hang over the cradle, since the paint may fall off on the child.

........Another kind of mobile is "KraJab Puang", made in the shape of a triangle. A mother can simply make one using pieces of cloth, and it is as cute as a Pla TaPian mobile.
