Toys from nature
(cont.)
Banana-stalk horse
| ........Boys love
advanturous games. Thus, they tended to make
believe that they had their own horses.
The animals were made of banana's midrib by
stripping off the banana leaf, keeping only the
midrib and a small piece of leaf as its tail. Then,
holding one end, the child could pretend he was
riding a horse. This was a great amusement for
them. |
Banana-stalk gun
| ........The midrib of the
banana leaf is used since it was available all over
the country. To make a gun, first, strip off the
banana leaf, keeping only the firm part of the
midrib. Next, on the smooth surface slit the stalk
open with a knife. Do this again as many times as
you like. Finally, raise the slit parts, strike
them sharply with the side of your hand and there
will be a loud noise. Children make believe it was
their gun. |

 Coconut-shell race
| ........A great delight
for children. Chop the coconut shell into two and
pierce a hole at the bottom of each. Then thread a
cord through the hole and tie a piece of stick or
a nail at one end. Do the same with another.
Make sure that the string is strong enough for
you to hold when you stand on the shells. To join
the race, each player has to balance himself on
them while carefully gripping the cord. |
 The betel leaf sledge
| ........The betel palm
often sheds it leaves, which falls down with the husk.
Children adapted it for their own use. They sat on
the betel leaf which served perfectly as a sledge.
The sitter clutched the edges of the betel leaf,
whilst the dragger clasped the other end and pulled
it with all his might. When tired, the latter would
take turn to sit and let his friend drag. |
